Vine Deloria, Sioux Activist, Dead at 72
Vine Deloria Jr., a groundbreaking author and an influential advocate of American Indian rights, has died, family members said. He was 72. Deloria, a Sioux Indian, died Sunday of complications from an aortic aneurysm, said his son, Phil Deloria. The author was considered one of the most outspoken --! and persuasive -- proponents of Indian cultural and political identity. His best-known book, ''Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto,'' attacked the American Indians' treatment by settlers and the government.

House Defeats Medical Marijuana Bill.

Less than a week after the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government could legally prosecute patients who smoke marijuana at the recommendation of their doctor, the House rejected a bill that would have undercut this decision by preventing the Justice Department from criminalizing patients who smoke cannabis in the ten states that had previously passed legislation in favor of medical marijuana. The bill was defeated by a 264-161 marjin, receiving support from 72% of House Democrats and 15 republicans.

6.12.2005
Supreme Court Votes Against the Legalization of Medical Marijuana.

On June 6, the Supreme Court dealt a blow to the medical marijuana movement when it ruled that those who smoke marijuana in order to treat chronic pain and debilitating symptoms of serious illness may still be prosecuted by federal authorities. The ruling applies not only to those who grow the drug, but also to those patients who smoke marijuana at the recommendation of their doctor.

Old Military Sites Pose Risk to Indian Tribes.

In the August 2004 issue of American Sociological Review, two sociologists reported their review of closed military sites in more than 3,100 counties in the lower 48 states. They found that a significant number of sites rated "extremely" dangerous by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were located near reservations.

Indians' Genetic Material Sold on Internet.

The Brazilian government has asked Interpol, the international police, to intervene in what it says is the illegal sale of genetic material from its indigenous peoples by a U.S. research centre.

11.16.2004
Bill Would Redefine Indian Tribe.

Kennewick Man's Fate in the Balance. After eight years of bitter controversy, the ultimate fate of the ancient hunter known as Kennewick Man may hinge on a quiet attempt by outgoing Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell to change "is" to "is, or was."

4.18.2004
Kennewick Man, US 9th Circuit Court Rehearing.

The Ninth Circuit denied the request for rehearing en banc of the Bonnichsen decision (Kennewick Man case) by the entire panel.  In short, this means that the case is effectively over, unless there is an appeal to the United States Supreme Court.

2.12.2004
Anthropologist perspective on US 9th Circuit Court Ruling Kennewick Man.

For those anthropologists who specialize in American Indian research, the recent successful suit brought by a handful of archaeologists demanding the right to scientifically study the Kennewick Man skeletal remains is a dark hour in the history of our discipline. I can think of nothing more dangerous for anthropology in the United States than a court decision (reaffirmed in the 9th circuit appeal) that subordinates the 1st amendment rights of American Indians to the interests of "science". These decisions will further galvanize opposition to all kinds of anthropological research among American Indians. It also seems clear that the weaknesses in NAGPRA may well be fatal. An appropriate response to these unfortunate court decisions is a
NAGPRA summit similar to the Native American Church summit that occurred when the Supreme Court denied the first amendment rights of members of the Native American Church (the so-called Smith Case). A legislative initiative by the Tribes will probably be required if the weaknesses in the repatriation sections of NAGPRA are to be overcome.

Federal Court Upholds Scientist's Suit to Study the Kennewick Man

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled, on Wednesday,  February 4, 2004, against five native American Tribes and  the US Army Corps  of Engineers in the ongoing case of one of the oldest sets of human remains Found in North America. Known as the Kennewick Man, the 9300 year old skeleton has been the subject of long dispute between eight archaeologists opposed to repatriation of those and other ancient human remains found  in North America to Native American tribes seeking their immediate reburial.
